The Fast and the Furriest
The start of the year has been rough.
Coming off of a particularly taxing election season and a seemingly turbulent start of a new administration, January is never the easiest time of year to begin with. The holidays are over, the cold weather is really just starting to settle in, and there’s not tons to look forward to until spring.
But Twitter has changed all that.
Every day, multiple times a day, viral Twitter hashtags start and change and become a fun and diverse way to explore a plethora of the trending topics of the moment, from the serious and contentious to the lighthearted and fun. Often, they’re the perfect way to learn about trending or developing news, but they’re usually just a great way to cheer up.
This week’s best viral Twitter hashtag? #CuteAnimalTweetOff. And yes, it was everything you’d expect it to be and more.
It all started with this seal
The tweet off began when the Smithsonian’s National Zoo dropped this press release about the birth of a grey seal on January 25th.
Then the Virginia Aquarium got involved
But the National Zoo’s claim was not to be taken without contest. One woman then challenged the Virginia Aquarium to strike back, and they did in spades with this amazing capture of an otter/sprey combo.
And you can bet the National Zoo had words for them.
But the Nat’l Zoo slapped back
But these weren’t the only zoos to get involved in the friendly competition…
