According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 300,000 refugees had perilously crossed the Mediterranean and entered Europe as of August 2015, with at least 2,500 reported deaths.

DeCaires Taylor explained, however, that “the work is not intended as a tribute or memorial to the many lives lost but as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility of our now global community.”
