Martin Pistorious from the UK was just 12-years-old when he became very sick and doctors diagnosed him with Cryptococci Meningitis. He eventually became more and more ill: He lost the ability to move, make eye contact and even speak. His doctors told Martin’s parents to take him home as he would eventually die, calling him a “vegetable”.
His loving parents did bring him home and cared for him. But he didn’t pass away even though he didn’t show any signs of improvement for over a decade. But eventually the unbelievable happened: He woke up.

According to NPR News, Martin’s father, Rodney, would get up at 5 AM every morning, get his son dressed, put him in the car to take him to a special care center. Rodney said, “Eight hours later, I’d pick him up, bathe him, feed him, put him in bed, set my alarm for two hours so that I’d wake up to turn him so that he didn’t get bedsores.”

Martin is now 39-years-old and says he was totally aware of everything going on around him while he wasn’t showing any physical signs of being present. He said, “You don’t really think about anything. You simply exist. It’s a very dark place to find yourself because, in a sense, you are allowing yourself to vanish.”
