In a recent Japanese press conference for The Revenant, for which he won an Oscar, DiCaprio used his environmental beliefs as a platform to discuss politics.
To a crowd of hundreds of fans and press, DiCaprio alluded to the current state of American elections saying, “We should not have a candidate who doesn’t believe in modern science to be leading our country. Climate change is one of the most concerning issues facing all humanity and the United States needs to do its part.”
His targets? Republican candidates Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Maybe an actor of his influence could help voters see the light…
Both Trump and Cruz have made clear statements in the past dismissing climate change as a topic of worth or worry.
Cruz has called climate change a “pseudo-scientific theory” whereas Trump has downright dismissed it, saying he was “not a big believer in man-made climate change.” The Democratic candidates, on the other hand, have both spoken out, saying that climate change and its environmental impacts must be addressed sooner rather than later, and that denying their existence is foolish.
