Imagine There’s No Countries

Friday evening’s unprecedented terrorist attacks in Paris have left the world on edge, resulting in newfound domestic fear and renewed foreign violence. But even in the City of Light’s darkest hour, the citizens of Paris found solace in one of humanity’s most redeeming and unifying traditions: music.

Artists and musicians from France and abroad took to the streets shortly after the attacks to sing a verse or two for peace, love, and humanity, and the results were astounding and impactful, bringing strangers together even at the worst of times.

He wrote on his band’s Facebook page that he apologized for leaving so quickly and informing fans and media that it would be very difficult to contact him while on the road. His emotional response to the terrorist attacks was so visceral he packed his bags and headed to Paris immediately.

Throughout the weekend, he played his piano at the various points of Friday’s organized attacks. Hearing John Lennon’s “Imagine” played on the streets in front of these places simply brings tears to my eyes.

“Hallelujah”

Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is one of my favorite songs on the planet. It’s also the perfect song choice to play in the wake of Friday’s tragedy.

Watching this musician inspire an entire crowd of strangers to sing along is the sort of thing you could only expect to find in a community so ravaged by heartache and terror. It just goes to show that humanity and love can not be deterred even by the most heinous of crimes.

Even musicians that couldn’t readily get to Paris did their best to show solidarity with the City of Light. This Scottish musician also shared a rendition of “Imagine,” but his bilingual version makes it even more emotional.
