So why are some people with gay tendencies inclined to be more homophobic?
“Sometimes people are threatened by gays and lesbians because they are fearing their own impulses, in a sense they ‘doth protest too much,'” said co-author Richard Ryan. “In addition, it appears that sometimes those who would oppress others have been oppressed themselves, and we can have some compassion for them too, they may be unaccepting of others because they cannot be accepting of themselves.” He also stressed that this of course isn’t true for all people who show anti-gay attitudes.
But what’s the source of the repressed behavior?
Look to the parents.
Across various studies on homophobia, participants that reported coming from more authoritarian homes were the most likely to show discrepancy between their self-described and implicit sexual orientations.
More likely to have negative attitudes towards gay people, these repressed individuals were presumed to be raised in strict households where they observed homophobic actions and learned to repress their own feelings.
Ryan warns, “We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat. Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences.”
