Though astronomers have suspected for water vapor to be present throughout the universe, they were shocked by their findings at APM 08279+5255.

Never before had water been detected this far away from Earth, and never so much of it. Approximately 4,000 times the amount of water in the Milky Way was found at the quasar, and mostly in the form of water vapor, whereas our galaxy’s water reservoirs are mostly frozen.

Putting that amount of water into easily-understood terms is what’s truly shocking…

In terms of the Earth’s water supply, the amount of water vapor found at APM 08279+5255 is equivalent to about 140 trillion times all of the oceans of the world.

Aside from the sheer size of the discovery, the findings have shed new light on the presence of water in the universe. Since the water exists over hundreds of light-years around the black hole as vapor and not ice, scientists know that the quasar is much hotter than galaxies like the Milky Way.

Since the light from the quasar has taken some 12 billion years to reach Earth, it also gives researchers a glimpse into what the universe was like when just 1.6 billion years old, as per the Big Bang Theory, making this the oldest water ever discovered.

According to Matt Bradford of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, “It’s another demonstration that water is pervasive throughout the universe, even at the very earliest times.”

If there’s life out there, it sounds like they must be thirsty. SHARE this!
