To the stars and beyond

This costly project is called Breakthrough Starshot, which will rely on tiny “nanocraft” that flies amazingly on sails pushed by laser beams of light through the universe. This ship is aimed to fly to the Alpha Centauri star system 25 trillion miles away on a twenty year mission. (That’s 4.37 light years.) To put that in perspective, it would take about 30,000 years to get there with today’s fastest spacecraft.

Each of these interstellar sailboats is expected to carry cameras and built in GPS to search deep space for habitable planets. Many astronomers believe that there is a reasonable chance of an Earth-like planet existing in Alpha Centauri’s three-star system.
