Special Razzie Disses
Some years, the Razzies introduce new, fun categories when an especially awful movie deserves a shoutout. Previous examples include Worst Excuse for Family Entertainment (RV) and even Worst Excuse for an Actual Movie (The Cat in the Hat).
Although Worst Screen Combo has been around since 1994, the judges always find new ways to think of awful and clever nominees. For example, aside from actual actor combos, some of the Worst Screen Combo nominees this year are Johnny Depp and His Glued-On Moustache for Mortdecai, Kevin James and EITHER His Segue OR His Glued-On Moustache for Paul Blart Mall: Cop 2, Adam Sandler and Any Pair of Shoes for The Cobbler, and even All Four “Fantastics” in the new Fantastic Four reboot. Ouch!
Now for the good stuff. Among this year’s nominees for worst overall film, these are the movies that ended up in a four-way tie for most nominations total. Each of the following films had six nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards, landing them among the worst of 2015.
Worst Picture: Pixels
Pixels had a huge ad campaign all spring before coming out on July 16, 2015. A New York Post review said, “Sandler has found it vastly profitable to remain a mental middle-schooler into middle age, but, crucially, he’s stuck in a 1982 kid time capsule: His jokes are as fresh as the antique store.”
Worst Picture: Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
Sometimes you wonder why movies are made. Thanks to its young target audience, the original film was the top performer of MLK Weekend when it premiered in 2009. Though a financial success, the sequel was chastised by Variety as being “The sort of movie that goes beyond mere mediocrity to offer possible evidence of a civilization in decline.”
