Mexicans were leading the pack.
The Olympics have been the topic of conversation for the past week and they still are! But we’re supposed to be talking about the talents and skills of all participating athletes. Well, that’s not the case here. So many people are focused on what the competitors are wearing, how their hair looks, and, now, how great or not-so-great their bodies are.
Mexican gymnast Alexa Moreno is a victim of harsh criticism following her gymnastics competition. It’s not about her stumbling or missing a step, it’s about her body. Her 99-pound body! After she competed in the Rio games, critics took to social media and comment on how she should lose weight. Well, there were more than a few people who came to her defense, and it wasn’t pretty.
Things got real when tweeters shamed the body-shamers.
Alexa Moreno is one of the few Mexican athletes to compete in a category that isn’t known for Mexican participation. She proudly represented her country when she competed in the women’s uneven bars, floor exercise, beam, vault, and all-around gymnastic heats at the Rio games this past Sunday. She finished in 31st place, failing to go on to the final rounds.
Shamers Gonna Shame

While some proud fans took to social media to show love and support, others looked past her performance and zoomed in on her body. Body shamers took their place and began hurling insults at the 22-year-old, calling her “fat” and comparing her to a pig.
One user tweeted this, a photo of a pig with a caption that translated into, “Gymnast Mexican Alexa Moreno, the pig, was already eliminated in her second jump.”
